Definition - What does Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments Waived mean?

Clinical laboratory improvement amendments waived, or CLIA waived, refers to a subcategory of the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments Act in which simple medical tests that generally have a low risk of false positives or false negatives can be conducted at home or on at the worksite. For the purposes of workplace testing, CLIA waived tests are tests that can be administered on-site provided the site has a CLIA certificate.

SureHire explains Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments Waived

CLIA waived defines a measure categorized under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments Act, which allows basic medical tests to be performed outside of a laboratory because they are very simple tests with low risks of incorrect results. The CLIA waived alternative is a relatively inexpensive formality made available to people who are required to submit to drug testing, but prefer to bypass traditional laboratory protocol. A collection site kit version is equally reliable in terms of generating identical results. However, if a worker tests positive for drug traces in their system, then they are required to submit to a non-waived CLIA lab testing for definitive results.

Some substances that can be tested at the point of collection (within certification guidelines) with CLIA waived tests include but are not limited to: methadone, oxycodone, benzodiazepines, amphetamines, opiates, and cocaine metabolites.
